Japanese Genmaicha Green Tea
In Stock From £4.20
One of the more popular banchas, genmaicha is a mixture of yanagi and roasted genmai (a variety of brown rice). The genmai is roasted at two different levels: lightly roasted and deeply roasted until the rice grains puff. The result is a unique savoury flavour with a strong popcorn like aroma.
This traditional Japanese green tea is thought to have its origins as a drink of the working classes. Adding toasted rice to the tea would make this expensive luxury more affordable.
Tea steeped from these tea leaves has a light yellow hue. Genmaicha is soothing and mellow; the popped rice adds a wonderful balance of roasty aroma to the refreshing green tea!
PREPARATION
Place 3g (1tsp) of tea per person in a pot or cup infuser. Using boiling water to steep green tea can damage the leaves, so instead use water that is around 80°c (boiling water that has been allowed to cool for 2 minutes). Brew for 3 - 5 minutes according to taste. The same leaves can be re-used for up to 3 infusions.
